Poised + Polished

Must-have Red Lip Shades!

February is the month of love, whether it’s for yourself, your boo or your pup! And when I think of this month, similarly to Christmas, I always have the desire to incorporate red into my wardrobe, makeup or nail polish.

That being said, I surveyed 5 of the best current shades of red lipstick to share with you all! Each of which can be purchased at Sephora.

1. Yves Saint Laurent

Rouge Pur Couture

Lip Collection

Color: 13 Le Orange (bright orange)

*Limited Edition*

Retails: $38

This orange-based red has a glossier feel in application, the cutest gold packaging and is limited edition. Generally speaking, I love orange-based reds because they read as creative and artsy—when applied correctly—and are a great way to express individuality.

2. BECCA

BECCA x Khloé Kardashian & Malika Haqq

Ultimate Lipstick Love

Color: Hot Tamale (spicy red)

*Limited Edition*

Retails: $24

Khloé has always been one of my favorite Kardashians, due to her strength, resilience and vesty personality, so it naturally makes sense that she would create a vibrant, yet spicy red lipstick as a part of her collaboration with BECCA cosmetics. This lipstick has warmer undertones with a satin finish, and would be flattering on a number of skin tones.

3. Bobbi Brown

Luxe Matte Lipstick

Color: Fever Pitch (true orange)

Retails: $37

Even though the description says true orange, I feel like it’s more of a strawberry red hue. It’s definitely a flat matte, with heavily saturated pigment. It doesn’t have any sheen, so to make sure it won’t get chalky I would recommend using a lip primer as a base first. My go-to is MAC Prep + Prime Lip.

4. Smashbox

Be Legendary Lipstick

Color: Bing (classic red matte)

Retails: $21

The Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick is slightly more hydrated than Bobbi Brown’s Luxe Matte Lipstick, but I would still recommend a lip primer first as a base. It’s a classic red, making it the perfect pop of color for any outfit. If you’re just starting to venture into reds, this hue is a great place to start!

5. Nars

Audacious Lipstick

Color: Annabella (poppy red)

Retails: $34

This lipstick is my favorite of the five! It also has a satin finish, but the key attribute is that it feels so good during application. It’s nicely hydrated and rich in color. Nars products in general are a great go-to, so I would definitely recommend trying this!

Learning the right hue(s) for you:

Reds can be a bit tricky, so it’s important to understand the undertones in your skin, such as yellow or red, and find hues that complement your complexion, while still allowing you to express yourself.

Beauty Tip: If you’re looking for a specific color or texture in-store and are unable to find it, you can always mix and match (whether using a concealer underneath, layering multiple shades or applying gloss on top).
