Poised + Polished

The Perfect NYE Ensemble

Every year women run around the city in search of "the perfect outfit" to create their WOW moment. Here's how I executed my look this year in NYC.

Something I’ve done for years is create a vision for the overall aesthetic I’m trying to execute. I usually think about the place I want to go and imagine how I want to feel. I visualize the moment in my mind in its entirety. This year was no different.

The past few years I’ve preferred to have a more minimalistic yet chic vibe, but this year I wanted something else. I wanted to feel polished and sophisticated, still classically chic, but sexy in a lady like sort of way. People who know me well know that I lean more towards conservatism in my dressing preferences, so my idea of sexy may not be the same as the next woman’s. But when I give styling advice I always say that as long as you personally feel beautiful and sexy that’s all that really matters.

After thinking about the look I want to create, I then shop around and research what’s on trend, thinking about how to take what’s currently out there and make it authentic to my sense of self. Velvet was huge this fall/winter, so I knew that it would be ideal in terms of fabrication, but I also wanted something eye catching with a bit of sparkle.

NYE 2019: At Lavo Nightclub in NYC wearing Maje.
Style Tip: “It’s better to dress in a way that feels true to yourself, opposed to dressing purely for a current trend, and letting the clothing wear you!”

In the end I opted for the Rivy, a black sequin dress from Maje, with a wrap closure and strong shoulder accent. I always feel beautiful in black, so I wear it often. But I wanted something different from the 100 other black dresses that currently reside in my closet—so this hit the spot! I paired the dress with Christian Louboutin’s So Kate in black patent leather. Anyone who’s ever worn Louboutin’s knows that this specific shoe has the highest pitch and is worn purely for looks, not for comfort!

For accessories I kept it simple with black onyx and gold accent earrings, my signature black and gold Hermès cuff bracelet, and a Saint Laurent black velvet clutch.
